Help Us Feed Hungry Kids This Summer

Drop off canned food throughout town or we’ll pick up!

Did you know summer is the hardest time of year for hungry kids? It makes sense considering schools provide lunch and breakfast for free or at reduced prices to low income kids during school days. But what are kids to do during a never-ending summer break? Food banks can lend a helping hand, but they are in a pickle, too — receiving most of their donations over the holidays, but going “dry” in the summer. Sunshine Division Collection Barrel

That’s why the Jack Howk SM / Rescue Rooter® team has teamed up with the Sunshine Division to help fill the summer food void. Help us feed the hungry by dropping off any canned food item at participating locations. If we are already servicing your home or business, we can pick up items from you there and even reduce your bill by up to $25 at the same time!

Your donations will be transported to the Sunshine Division’s emergency food warehouse, and then placed directly into the hands of children in need.

Reduce Your Service Bill!

When our drain specialists and plumbers are out on service calls, they can also pick up donated food from customers that express an interest in participating. Customers will get $1 off per canned food item on any service up to $25 (offer expires by December 31, 2015 and can also be combined with other coupons offered by Jack Howk / Rescue Rooter.

Why We Are Doing This?

The need for food among local families is startling. In fact, nearly 50% of Portland public school children qualify for free and reduced lunch or breakfast, while 29.2% of Oregon kids are “food insecure” — meaning they don’t always know where their next meal will come from. This is the highest percentage of any state ( Oregonian, 2014).

In response, we launched our first-ever food drive for the Sunshine Division — a local charity that has partnered with the Portland Police Bureau for over 90 years. We especially value the work the Sunshine Division does on behalf of families and children and are honored to help. Sunshine Division Company by Jack Howk

Since 1923, the Sunshine Division has provided emergency food at its North Portland warehouse six days per week. Sunshine Division assistance is also provided 24/7 through a partnership with the Portland Police Bureau. Each police precinct stores food boxes that can be dispatched anytime to local families and individuals in need.

“The Jack Howk / Rescue Rooter team’s enthusiasm is infectious — they even started collecting food for us before the designated food drive start date.” Kyle Camberg, Executive Director of the Sunshine Division

Extending Our Efforts!

To make an even greater impact, we have divided our workforce into four teams for the food drive, with each team selecting a charity. The team that raises the most food (measured by weight) this summer will have the honor of donating $1,000 to their designated charity on behalf of Jack Howk / Rescue Rooter. The charities are:

Wounded Warrior Project Wounded Warrior Project® — honoring and empowering injured service members across the nation.

Providence Child Center — caring for Portland, Oregon’s most Providence Health and Services Logo
vulnerable children for over 60 years.

GuideDogs for the Guide Dogs for the Blind Blind’s Oregon Campus (located in Boring, Ore.) — preparing highly qualified guide dogs to serve and empower individuals who are blind or have low vision.

DoveLewis Emergency Animal Hospital

Portland Area Canine Therapy Teams (PACTT) — DoveLewis Emergency Animal Hospital’s partnership with Guide Dogs for the Blind to bring assisted therapy to the local community.

Please help us feed Portland’s hungry children this summer by participating!
